How many shots do you actually need to capture for a focus stack for your image to be sharp from front to back? If you don't take enough, you won't be able to achieve perfect sharpness. But if you take too many, sorting and merging the photos together is a pain. In my opinion, you can achieve a focus stack with 2-3 images in most scenarios when you don't have a foreground element within two feet of your lens at f/6.3.
